I.                 What did you make?

-        Dragonfly set with vase, plate, and bowl

o   Same symbol, different application

-        Altered lip bowls

o   Taller bowl: traditional glaze, altered lip.

o   Wider bowl: glaze sits on the project to reflect the non-symmetrical shape

-        Pumpkins and apples

o   Apply skills in a new way with new forms. Make a recognizable object using the techniques I have learned

-        Slab projects – stream bed

o   Use of new materials (rocks, glass) to create a project that suggests a natural stream bed.

II.               How did you make it?

-        Dragonfly set

o   Bowl: threw a vase, used cookie cutter to trace out a dragonfly shape, cut it out to so the shape is negative space

o   Plate: wheel-thrown, stain in the same dragonfly shape in cobalt blue

o   Vase: Wheel-thrown. The dragonfly shape was traced onto the vase and the clay surrounding it was shaved off so the dragonfly appears to protrude.

-        Altered Lip Bowls

o   Made bowls and, on the day I threw them, I stretched out the lip with my finger to create the desired form

-        Pumpkins and Apples

o   Threw vases and choked them all the way to form the stems

-        Slab Projects

o   Used porcelain to create the streambed. Draped the flattened porcelain on paper platters with rocks underneath to make it bumpy, or ‘rocky.’

o   Scattered small polished rocks randomly on the bisqueware glazed clear

o   Put broken glass in the low points to pool and create a water effect

III.              Why – theme statement

-        The theme of the projects I have created this semester involves exploration and innovation. My projects demonstrate a departure from my previous standard shapes and glazes to more varied and advanced concepts. The projects included in my theme presentation explore specific art elements, such as negative space, new glazing techniques, and unusual forms.
