Alterations to simple shapes can represent cultural references. This pumpkin began as a thrown cylinder that was closed at the top. A rib tool was used to create ridges in the sides, analoous to the ridges on pumpkins. The day after it was made, a face was carved and the bottom was smoothed out. The pumpkin is approximately 4 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall (including the stem). The inside is glazed black, the edges inside the eyes and mounth are yellow, and the stem in shadow green. The outside has orange stain and clear glaze. This project is obviously a pumpkin, meaning it evokes thought of Halloween and fall. Deliberate alterations and glazing techniques can make a project represent another object.
